Witnesses to war
The accounts of Adolf Hitler and Father Norbert are in marked contrast. Confronted by the War, Father Norbert expressed concern about the destruction, the fires, the wounded and the bewilderment of local people in the face of catastrophe; concerns which do not appear in Hitler’s account. Ernst Jünger describes the terror he was seized with when he and fellow soldiers suffered pain together in an improvised hospital and he was confronted by the death of another human being.
