Barthélémy Léon Carlier

At the age of 20, Barthélemy Carlier, a resident of Bugnicourt and the son of a miner and off-license holder, enlisted in the Infantry Regiment on 16 September 1914. He had a brilliant, recognised and remarkable military career. Herose through the ranks from private to warrant officer, to which rank he was appointed on 30 April 1919. He distinguished himself on numerous occasions, particularly at Maurepas on 27 September 1916 when he crossed the line of fire several times in order to deliver intelligence to the company commander. He received an injury to the calf from a shell burst in Craonne on 16 April 1917. After being evacuated to the Gribeauval hospital in Amiens, he rejoined his company on 14 August 1917.
He re-enlisted for a further year on 5 August 1919 before being demobilised on 27 July 1920.
Back in Bugnicourt, he took up farming and married Henriette Mollet on 16 May 1921.
He received a Regiment Citation in 1916, the War Cross and, later, the Military Medal under the Decree of 20 May 1953.
