The Return of Sports
Already in full expansion before the war, sports became a symbol of the country’s renaissance. The queen of classic bike races, Paris-Roubaix, saw new life as early as Easter 1919, to cross the Nord hell. The crowds went wild for Georges Carpentier. October 12, 1920, in Jersey City (USA), he “KO”d Battling Levinsky to become the world light-heavyweight champion.
New categories of the population start practising sports. Foot races and swimming races through the cities again brought together numerous participants.
