Hostages
During the German occupation, hostages were designated as a guarantee of the cooperation and submission of local populations. They were chosen from among the town’s dignitaries. In Lille, 60 hostages were designated by the Mayor and the Prefect. They were required, in turns, to spend the night at the Citadel. Such hostages included socialist deputies such as Gustave Delory, the Bishop of Lille, the Mayor Édouard Delesalle, industrialists and others.
