The images of woman
The German occupation press portrayed, through drawings, two opposing images of woman. The French woman was presented as frivolous and superficial, obsessed with fashion. The caricaturists also mocked the recruitment of women into the French army, a roundabout way of disparaging the enemy army, an army of femmelettes, or little women. By contrast, the German woman was portrayed as curvaceous, an attentive mother, visiting her wounded husband, taking part in the harvest.
