War Cripples and Invalides
Although fighting on the battlefield had now ended, the conflict left its mark, on bodies, but also on minds. The disabled and so-called ‘broken faces’ (veterans with facial injuries) are the most visible examples and not a day passes without seeing at least one in the street. The more “valid” obtained veterans’ cards while others were but mere shadows of their former selves and their families struggled to care for them.
